However, thanks to the proliferation of high speed telecommunications networks, organizations are looking at new ways to use distance learning. Training that once required instructors and students to travel long distances can now be conducted via videoconferencing. Workshops that once required employees to take time off work can now be taken online. Libraries are only one of many kinds of organizations that are taking advantage of the potential of distance learning.

* A multipoint control unit (MCU) is typically necessary for a videoconference involving more than two sites -- although more and more videoconference units are becoming available that connect up to four sites in a call without the need for an external MCU

* Videoconferencing allows live interaction between all participants

In addition to helping distance learners locate information and resources, librarians with a basic understanding of distance learning will be better able to understand distance learning client requests for help. This page is meant to serve as a guide for supporting distance learners in your library.
