Online training can take the form of either short-term or long-term coursework. Short classes tend to be stand-alone modules taken for Continuing Education (CE) credit, or to learn/review a specific skill area. Longer classes may be semester long courses offered by universities for certificate, undergraduate or graduate-level credit.

Libraries have the option of creating online learning offerings themselves, pointing library patrons to for-fee online opportunities available on the Internet (and possibly at discounted prices arranged through the library), and making free tutorials available through the library Web site.
